5 tricks to boost your blog posts

It’s pretty soul-destroying when you spend hours, possibly even days slogging over a blog post only for it to fall flat. No views, no likes, no comments, no leads, nothing.


We’ve all been there and while it’s enough to make you want to put your writing days behind you, that’s not necessary. A few clever tricks can really help to boost your readership, revenue and visibility so let’s get started.


Know your audience


Like really know your audience. Have an image of your target reader in your head and be specific about it. Think age, gender, job title, marital status, interests, hobbies and what their values are.


Something you should do regardless of whether or not you’re blogging is create customer avatars or personas. These are fictional characters which reflect the key attributes of your audience. It’s only once you know this that you’ll be able to successfully market to them.

When writing a blog, a simple trick is to ask yourself if your content relates to your audience and if you think they would really want to read it.


Write great headlines


There’s so much content available online which makes it really difficult to stand out. Your headline is the only chance you have to grab people’s attention and make them want to click on your post. It doesn’t matter how great your content is – if your headline is bad, nobody’s going to read it.


How to write great headlines:


  • Practice – the more blogs you publish, the more you’ll get an idea of the types of headlines that work well and the ones that don’t

  • Use split test headlines when sending your email campaigns so you can see which headline generates the highest open rates. You can then apply this knowledge to your blog posts

  • If it sits right, use keywords in your headline so people are more likely to find your content when doing a Google search

  • Re-use past winning headline formulas

  • When posting your blogs across the different platforms, you may need to use different headlines. You may be able to get away with a more jovial headline on Facebook for example but keep it professional on LinkedIn

  • Be specific – headlines work best when they’re specific. A study by Conductor looked at the most successful headlines and found those which include numbers to be the most successful



Use long tail keywords


If it’s conversions you’re after, consider using long-tail keywords instead of the traditional one or two word phrases.


Long tail keywords are three or four words long and are much more specific. So instead of using ‘Windsor restaurant’ for example, opt for ‘Italian restaurant Windsor.’


Why do this?


Long tail keywords are more niche which means that admittedly, search volumes are going to be lower. Because they’re so specific however, it means that the people using them are much more likely to be closer to making a purchase. You therefore have a higher likelihood of converting them into a customer.

Offer value


Ultimately, the reason you’re blogging is to attract customers and increase sales. While readers do expect some sort of promotion to be weaved into a blog post, they’re primarily looking for information that’s going to benefit them.


If your blogs are one long sales pitch, readers are going to switch off pretty quickly and it’s unlikely they’ll come back. High value blog ideas can include:


  • Case studies – this tells people more about what you do and allows you to demonstrate proof of how you’ve helped others

  • Q&A – what are the most common questions you get asked by prospective and current customers? Turn this into a blog post

  • Tutorials, guides, top tips and ‘how to’ lists

  • Latest industry news

Share your posts


If you want people to check out your latest blog post, make sure they know it’s there.


There are so many quick and easy ways to share your content including:


  • Your social media pages

  • Newsletters

  • Emails

  • Email signatures

Don’t forget to use relevant hashtags and tag any individuals or companies mentioned in the article so they can post it to their followers too.
